Niger Junta Appoints U.S.-Trained Military Officers to Key Jobs U.S.-trained military officers have been appointed to head five of eight regions of Niger by a junta that includes at least five U.S.-trained military officers, The Intercept has learned. While the Pentagon claims its instruction doesn’t lead to mutinies, innovative research by a former Pentagon analyst indicates the opposite could be true. The Nigerien junta, which calls itself the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland, seized power on July 26 and detained the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum. Earlier this month, the junta reportedly installed eight top security officials to govern its seven regions and the capital district. This consolidation of power included the appointments of Brig. Gens. Iro Oumarou and Ibrahim Bagadoma; Col. Maj. Oumarou Tawayé; Inspector General of Police Issoufou Mamane; and Col. Labo Issoufou. All have “participated in U.S.-sponsored training,” a State Department spokesperson said in response to questions from The Intercept....

Denver among top 15 most fun cities in US

Published Fri, 29 Mar 2024 11:45:45 GMT

Denver among top 15 most fun cities in US DENVER (Stacker) — People crunch any variety of metrics when settling on a city to visit or live in. Some of these factors have to do with the cost of living or staying, or how easy it is to go around by foot or public transit. Other considerations might be in the architecture, culture, and history of a place. But for many people, there's one prevailing question: Is it any fun? Some cities offer the same degree of fun or even the same type of fun, of course, so how do you figure out where to cut loose? To find out, and because "fun" can be an elusive variable, Stacker referred to WalletHub data which applies science in its methodology. The site compared 182 cities—including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state—across three dimensions: entertainment and recreation, nightlife and parties, and cost. Next, the cities were evaluated according to 65 key metrics, which ranged from fitness centers per capita to movie costs to average...

Where do Denver restaurants get their seafood? DENVER (KDVR) — It's not a secret, landlocked states like Colorado don't have saltwater fish. Most fish get shipped in from coastal states, but it's not just the expected seafood states like Boston or Maine, local restaurants get fish from all over. Did you know Denver is one of the freshest non-coastal places you can get fish? FOX31 asked local seafood restaurants where they get their fish from and how quickly it gets to the restaurant. Surprisingly, most of the answers were different:Water GrillWater Grill gets some of its fish from southern California, but it's really all over. The restaurant requests oysters from wherever they're in season. "We offer Kumamoto year round, but that's probably our most varied oyster. So right now we have Kumamoto from California. But just a couple of weeks ago, we had some from Mexico, and soon we will start sourcing them from Washington. So we get them from all over the coastline, depending on the season," said Mallory Fink, general manager at ...

Charges against Alec Baldwin could be refiled as forensic report shows trigger on gun used in ‘Rust’ shooting had to be pulled (CNN) — Independent testing on the weapon used in a fatal shooting on the set of the film “Rust” shows the trigger had to be pulled, the gun fired normally and did not malfunction, according to a report filed in court, raising the possibility that charges could be refiled against actor Alec Baldwin.“The fired evidence cartridge is the consequence of a normal hammer fall from the fully cocked position of the hammer,” the report compiled by Forensic Science Services in Arizona states. The report was filed as part of a defense motion on behalf of the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who is charged with tampering with the gun used in the shooting as well as two counts of involuntary manslaughter. The October 2021 shooting on a New Mexico film set killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. They were struck by a live round of ammunition fired from a prop gun being held by Baldwin while rehearsing a scene, officials have said.CNN’s calls to Baldwin for comme...

Bidens to visit Hawaii on Monday following Maui wildfires (CNN) — President Joe Biden and first lady Dr. Jill Biden will travel to Hawaii on Monday, the White House announced, as search, rescue and recovery efforts continue following the devastating wildfires there.“The President and First Lady will travel to Maui on Monday, August 21 to meet with first responders, survivors, as well as federal, state, and local officials, in the wake of deadly wildfires on the island,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. The planned visit comes amid mounting pressure on Biden, who – despite signing a federal disaster declaration last week – had only sparingly referenced the disaster, which has left at least 100 dead. The relative silence did not go unnoticed by Biden’s critics, including former President Donald Trump and other Republicans, and the Biden administration in recent days has been promoting its commitment to helping local authorities recover and rebuild. The Bidens, Jean-Pierre said, will “see firsthand the impacts...

Austria’s Putin ally says Russia better for holidays than Seychelles, Maldives Former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, who made headlines for dancing with Russian President Vladimir Putin at her wedding, is currently vacationing in the Russian hamlet of Petrushovo, a destination that she said Wednesday is better than the Maldives and Seychelles.“I love living here. I understand this world, I understood it when I was a girl,” Kneissl told Russian state-run news agency TASS. “Grandmothers, apples, summer, swim in the river. It’s a good life. I don’t need the Maldives or the Seychelles. It’s better.”Local media first reported Kneissl had been staying in the Ryazan region, southeast of Moscow, last week, arriving there shortly after the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. On Wednesday, Kneissl told TASS that she does not live in Petrushovo, but that she rented a “small house” there. While the Maldives is famous for its golden sandy beaches, glimmering turquoise waters and five-star resorts, tiny Petrushovo offers quiet count...
